Why Locals Love Konoba Hercegovac
Nestled alongside the tranquil riverbank in Čapljina, Konoba Hercegovac offers an authentic Bosnian barbecue and family dining experience that perfectly captures the rich culinary traditions of the region. This charming restaurant is renowned for its robust, flame-grilled flavors and warm, inviting atmosphere, making it a beloved stop for travelers exploring the natural beauty of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
The menu at Konoba Hercegovac is a carnivore’s delight, featuring succulent mixed grills that are celebrated by guests for their perfectly cooked meats and generous portions. One of the standout dishes, frequently praised by visitors, is the mixed grill for two, which beautifully showcases a variety of local cuts, each seasoned and prepared with care over an open flame to achieve a mouthwatering smokiness and tender juiciness.
Guests have shared glowing remarks about the quality and authenticity of the food. Anna Latysheva highlights the “deliciously prepared” meals and even notes the “soft, fluffy” gluten-free bread that accompanies the dishes, underscoring the restaurant’s accommodating nature for dietary preferences. Another favorite is the ramstek, a flavorful choice recommended to those avoiding pork, as noted by diner Yarah Elshaer, who also commends the helpfulness of the attentive staff.
The dining experience extends beyond the palate at Konoba Hercegovac. Imagine savoring a hearty Bosnian feast while gazing peacefully over the gently flowing river, the soothing natural backdrop enhancing every bite. Luuk Oitmann’s review perfectly reflects this sentiment, describing the setting as “very nice” and emphasizing the value with large portions at affordable prices. Though the menu is primarily in Croatian and English-speaking staff may be limited, the team’s genuine effort to assist guests ensures everyone feels welcome.
The atmosphere inside the restaurant is familial and authentic, filled with the aroma of grilled meats and traditional Bosnian spices. It’s worth noting, as Pam Cz pointed out, that the smoking culture is part of the local ambiance, which adds a genuine touch of Herzegovinian life but may be something to consider for sensitive guests.
Whether you’re winding down after touring the breathtaking Kravica waterfalls or seeking a flavorful, unpretentious meal with your family, Konoba Hercegovac embodies the true spirit of Bosnian barbecue cuisine. It’s a place where you don’t just eat—you indulge in the heartfelt hospitality and culinary heritage that make this corner of Bosnia & Herzegovina truly special.

We stopped here on the way from Kravica waterfalls for lunch. My husband and I shared a mixed grill for two, while overlooking the river. The food is deliciously prepared, some of the best we’ve had in BiH. My husband is gluten-free so we asked for bread on the side, which I was able to try. It was soft, fluffy and so yummy. The setting is so peaceful and staff are kind and efficient. Would love to come back here again in the future.

In all, I was pretty satisfied with my meal. A lot of the dishes had pork, but I was recommended the Ramstek. The waiter was very helpful and the portions were generous.

This place is located on the side of the river so you get a very nice view. The food is simply amazing, though a normal person will probably not finish a full portion. For lunch you can easily share a normal plate with 2 people. The menu is only in Croatian but the waiters try to help you if needed. Prices are cheap.

Food was great. Very little English but really delicious and great value food. Perfect place to stop after the waterfalls! Best cevapi we had on our week long trip

Very good food, top-level pljeskavica, and the same goes for the risotto. The only downside is the lack of an English menu and non-English-speaking staff. A warning for tourists from other countries: there’s a high concentration of cigarette smoke inside the restaurant.

Very nice Konoba with great food and very friendly owner. Just make sure you have a translator app on your phone, since the menu is only in Croatian language. I really enjoyed food there and the ambience. Don't get put off by the surrounding buildings - it doesn't look like a nice neighborhood but the Konoba itself is really worth a visit

Very nice old country cosy restaurant by the river. We have the meat and the grilled calamari and Sopska salad. Food and service were excellent.

We had such a great experience here! The service was excellent, especially thanks to the very friendly English-speaking waiter Mario who made us feel really welcome. The food was absolutely delicious - every single dish we tried was amazing. On top of that, the restaurant has a beautiful view of the river, which made the evening even more special. We highly recommend trying the sharing boards for two – they’re fantastic! You can pay in euro as well
